NECROMANCY EXPLAINED
- thanergy (death-energy) is released when cells die; it is retained like a charge by corpses and bones.
- thalergy (life-energy) is held by living cells; there is a lot of thalergy in fresh blood.
- soul (spirit-energy) is the consciousness that accumulates within any living thing; every complex living system has a soul.
A necromancer is a person born with the ability to perceive thalergy, thanergy, and soul. This functions like a sixth sense. As a tradeoff, necromancers tend to be skinny, sickly, and physically frail. They are the highest social class in John's canon; their powers are considered a blessing from God (John) himself. When necromancers want to manipulate thalergy-rich materials (like blood or the body), or interact with souls (like ghosts), they use thanergy (death-energy) as a power source. They can use bones as batteries, or kill something for a sudden burst of power.
Upon death, souls are swept into the River: a chaotic, disorienting afterlife-space. It does not map 1:1 onto physical reality, so John and his demigods can traverse it as a form of fast travel. The living cannot survive in the River— only John and his demigods, or lyctors, can do that. A lyctor is a necromancer who has murdered a loved one and eaten their soul, which will burn forever as their power source.
John is considered the source of all necromancy, with his lyctors as holy saints enacting his will. There are several schools of necromancy:
CANON SETTING
The Nine Houses is a star system of nine planets (or eight and a dwarf planet, John might admit).
- The First is a blue planet, revered as the holy cradle of humanity. It is uninhabited.
- The Second is a red planet associated with war and soldiers.
- The Third is (unconfirmed) a yellow gas giant with rings, associated with jewels and spycraft.
- The Fourth is (unconfirmed) a big ocean-blue ice giant associated with loyalty.
- The Fifth is a huge, stormy-orange gas giant associated with culture and power.
- The Sixth is a tiny planet next to the sun, associated with academia.
- The Seventh is (unconfirmed) a rocky planet associated with beauty.
- The Eighth is an ice giant that maybe once had a funny name, associated with religious zealotry.
- The Ninth is a tiny, cold dwarf planet associated with death and cults.
- The sun is called Dominicus, and if John ever stopped propping it up, it would collapse into a black hole.
John's enemies have terraformed countless exoplanets, and now John's army is conquering it all. They advance through space using necromancy-powered FTL travel. When they attack a planet, necromancers and their cavaliers (knights) slaughter anyone in their path to generate death-energy. Then they metaphysically kill the planet itself.A dead planet's ecosystem is permanently stunted. Planets have vengeful ghosts, grand and eldritch, called Resurrection Beasts. These are the only nonhuman sapient creatures in canon. Their existence is a secret, and they all want John's head.
The guerilla resistance is called Blood of Eden. They call necromancers "wizards," cavaliers "zombies," and lyctors "liches." They are rightfully terrified of John as a hostile god of death.
